What about US Military suicides?
Q. Much talk recently in the media about this tragedy. Admittedly, it is that. 135 such deaths already this year; 32 in the month of July alone. But whereas the commentary focuses on the psychological aspects that lead to military suicide, what I find confusing is the assumption that this is "news", and attempts to relate the phenomenon directly to today's conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The fact is that this had already become prevalent during and after the Vietnam War, at least. A 1990 article in the London 'Observer' said, "...in the 15 years since the end of this futile war, more US servicemen have died as a result of suicide (60,000), than were killed by all reasons combined during the conflict itself (55,000).".
